I lost my wife and only love after 60 years together. I thought I was a pretty strong guy after having gone through so much in my life…….I was wrong. My longing for my Beloved culminating by accidentally hearing thiis song. Tears flowed that had bottled up for years and my legs suddenly buckled. and I at last realized how grief and longing had robbed me of my manhood. I wanted to be home with her more than anything on Earth. That was 8 moths ago and my heart is as broken today as was on the first day of her passing.

This is the most beautiful and haunting song I have ever heard. We played it at my sister grace's funeral on july 1, 2012. Many had never heard it. It is so right for someone going home. I know just about everyone will be looking for it. Mary has the greatest voice, the words are wonderful. I cannot imagine a better song to sing any where, but especially at a funeral. I can't imagine anyone but her singing it. But this is awsome. Along with elvis' milky white way and if we never meet again. It was the best going home gift for her. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I firmly believe this is about a soul leaving the body and is now on the inbetween area between here and the afterlife especially the lines Surely sorrows will find their end and all our troubles will be gone ( There was a twilight zone show about a civil war soldier shot dead at Gettysburg and is passing some areas with other ghosts down the road on their way to the afterlife)

This song is about a Civil War soldier trying to get home. He is walking across the country side he once knew and sees the destruction done by the war. He knows he is near home and love ones are waiting there for him. This is from "Gods & Generals".
