John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote this song for Helen Shapiro in 1963, when The Beatles supported her on her tour, but her manager declined it. It was then recorded by their tour fellow Kenny Lynch which happened to be the first artist who covered any of The Beatles' songs.
In the book "Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now" Paul McCartney said about his work with John Lennon on this song, "It was our first stab at a ballad and had a little spoken preface. It was co-written. I don't think either of us dominated on that one, it was just a job, you could have called us hacks, hacking out a song for someone."
George Martin, the band's producer, played piano on this song. He played it half an octave lower and two times slower, and then the tapes were sped up two times to achieve the sound heard on the record.
