"Secret Love" lyrics

"Secret Love"
(from "Calamity Jane" soundtrack)

Once I had a secret love
That lived within the heart of me
All too soon my secret love
Became impatient to be free

So I told a friendly star
The way that dreamers often do
Just how wonderful you are
And why I'm so in love with you

Now I shout it from the highest hills
Even told the golden daffodils
At last my heart's an open door
And my secret love's no secret anymore

[Instrumental Interlude]

Now I shout it from the highest hills
Even told the golden daffodils
At last my heart's an open door
And my secret love's no secret anymore

"Secret Love" was used in the 1953 film "Calamity Jane", in which Doris Day played the lead role.
This track was recorded in the studio in less than 15 minutes in one take. She recalled, "When I got there I sang the song with the orchestra for the first time ... That was the first and only take we did. [...] When I finished, Ray [Heindorf] called me into the sound booth grinning from ear to ear and said, 'That's it. You're never going to do it better.'"
This song was a number-one hit for Doris Day on both the Billboard and Cash Box, and also a number-one hit in the UK. It won the 1953 Academy Award for "Best Song".
