"Alone" lyrics

"Alone"

I hear the ticking of the clock
I'm lying here the room's pitch dark
I wonder where you are tonight
No answer on the telephone
And the night goes by so very slow
Oh I hope that it won't end though
Alone

Till now I always got by on my own
I never really cared until I met you
And now it chills me to the bone
How do I get you alone
How do I get you alone

You don't know how long I have wanted
To touch your lips and hold you tight, oh
You don't know how long I have waited
and I was going to tell you tonight
But the secret is still my own
and my love for you is still unknown
Alone
Till now I always got by on my own
I never really cared until I met you
And now it chills me to the bone
How do I get you alone
How do I get you alone

How do I get you alone
How do I get you alone
Alone, alone

Writer(s): Tom Kelly, Billy Steinberg
Billy Steinberg recalled how he and Tom Kelly recorded an early version of "Alone" as i-Ten in 1983, "The album was titled 'Taking A Cold Look'. It didn't do much although it has sort of a cult following in Europe. [...] The most prominent song on it was 'Alone'. Tom and I recorded it for that record and just sort of set it aside when that record didn't succeed."
Tom Kelly sang the harmony part on the chorus of this track.
"Alone" became Heart's biggest hit, reaching number one in the USA and Canada. It is also their most-successful single in the UK, where it peaked on number three on the UK Singles Chart.
