"Dead Memories" lyrics

"Dead Memories"

Sitting in the dark, I can't forget
Even now, I realize the time I'll never get
Another story of the bitter pills of fate
I can't go back again. I can't go back again

But you asked me to love you and I did
Traded my emotions for a contract to commit

And when I got away, I only got so far
The other me is dead
I hear his voice inside my head

We were never alive, and we won't be born again
But I'll never survive with dead memories in my heart
Dead memories in my heart
Dead memories in my heart

You told me to love you and I did. Tied my soul into a knot and got me to submit

So when I got away, I only kept my scars
The other me is gone
Now I don't know where I belong

And we were never alive, and we won't be born again
But I'll never survive with dead memories in my heart
Dead memories in my heart
Dead memories in my heart
Dead memories in my heart

Dead visions in your name
Dead fingers in my veins
Dead memories in my heart
Dead memories in my heart
Dead memories in my heart
Dead memories in my heart, oh
Oh oh whoa
Oh oh whoa
Oh oh whoa

"Dead Memories" was released on December 1st, 2008 as the 3rd single from Slipknot's 4th album, "All Hope Is Gone". "Dead Memories" peaked at 3rd on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts, being their second most successful single at the time after "Snuff".
In an interview with Kerrang! magazine, frontman and lyricist Corey Taylor explained: "Its the story of my last 10 years. I've been holding onto these things for the last 10 years. I decided it's just time to let them go."
The music video for "Dead Memories" follows Corey Taylor as he walks through Des Moines, Iowa. He starts to dig up a hole in a field until he falls through the ground into a room. He proceeds to walk through various rooms, encountering the other band members one by one, interacting with or confronting some of them while only observing others. Taking Taylor's above statement into account, we can assume this is symbolic for him digging up and confronting buried memories so he can let go of them.
