Complete and utter destruction, of everything and everyone around. No discrimination, no distinction, wiping out everything no matter its size, shape, colour, race, everything reduced to nothing. Come about by pointless fighting of petty things like oil or money, woman or because of an imagined slight. Fought by the poor in the name of the rich, innocents hurt, friendships broken, pitting brother against brother, mother against child. Made to fight and die for something.

It's a plea. A futile plea. It's important to remember that it is a cover as well, so context of time and place in which it was written (1980s), and the events surrounding its profound lyrics are worth noting. Maynard has stripped it to its bare bones and makes it a universal truth, applicable to all catastrophes, whether they're big or small. His whispering, hissing tone is also deliberate, in order to drive home it home. This is part of the man's genius, because he's communicating the message quietly and directly in order to prick your ears. This is not a party rocker, it's a song that demands your attention and it's sublime in its execution. But Maynard also role-plays, so whether he actually thinks Annihilation is a universal truth is uncertain. The real universal truth is that mankind has never united in any meaningful way, on any meaningful cause, for any meaningful time, and never will, hence the futility of it. But, as Philip Roth says, "Dispute injustice like a man," which is exactly what Maynard, Biafra, Lennon etc. do. As the man says, "Learn to swim". That's its relevancy for our time. Sorry to ruin your day, but "10,000 Days" was an album of resignation, but that's just my subjective view of "Annihilation", which isn't universal - because people will always disagree, or worse - hence the futility. Peace! Lol!

I think the meaning of this song is complete destruction as in "Annihilation" That could mean genocide or just complete chaos in the world when every one just gets tired of everything or when a war with every one breaks out like the song imagine by the beatles its just talking about imagine if there was peace in the world then no one would have to worry about annihilation, when the government and all the systems just break down and shut down people are going to like go crazy and stuff then it will all break out and I think one day the government will shut down and one day there will be like a hugeee riot.

I believe annihilation is pretty much saying that if the human race continues to battl, e in the end all that will come from it is complete and total destruction. Humans are to selfish to see that they are completely destroying they're world, families, and friends by fighitng. If only all the humans could put they're emotions behind them, then we could all live in peace. And maybe not just the humans. For all those who have heard of me. Xxshadowrisexx out!

It's a plea. A futile plea. A universal idealism, so simple in its premise, but impossible in execution. Mankind has never united around a central cause, and never will. The only relevance is to the individual's subjective comprehension of the lyrics, and its relevance to his or her own universal truths, because there's no such thing as a universal truth, only a subjective one. Sorry to ruin your day, but "Learn to Swim".
